Typical price £884,000 (inc. VAT)

Patrick and Scott had big plans for a run-down stable block on their plot of land.

Deciding to build a home and finding an architect is often the easy part. Patrick and Scott worked successfully with an independent architect to gain planning permission for their home, but then found that deciding on the best way to build it was much more complicated. Which is why when they came across Facit Homes and the service we offer, they knew it was the right route for them.

The design was very ambitious and, as such, came in over their actual budget. We rationalised and redesigned parts of the home to ensure that we could get the cost to an acceptable level and deliver excellent value, whilst still keeping the quality and design intent of the original scheme.

The site is remote and yet close to family; the perfect spot for a new home overlooking some stunning countryside. The views inspired the placement of windows in the corner of the master bedroom, which bring in lots of natural light and give an unspoilt view over the neighbouring fields.

Specification

The design references the agricultural surroundings and a rural vernacular, and yet also reflects our modern, digital manufacturing approach to construction. All elements of this Facit Home were digitally manufactured off site and transported to site for assembly, including the detailed features such as the bespoke steel staircase and steel tree columns.

Fabricated from corten steel, also known as weathering steel, the tree columns and ground floor cladding were laser-cut and will age naturally to a stunning burnt orange colour. This rusting has a practical purpose, as it protects the core of the material from weather damage.

Large sliding doors separate the main living space from the garden, giving the opportunity to open up the house in summer months and allow easy use of the covered external area and the deck that wraps around this side of the home. This deck also gives access to a natural swimming pond.

The contrasting black timber and corten steel cladding create two separate forms; a black, agricultural inspired first floor, and an industrial, rust-coloured ground floor.

The overhanging first floor creates a covered outdoor space that acts as an entertaining area in all weather, and contains a master suite and 3 good sized bedrooms that share a family bathroom.

The ground floor is home to a huge open plan kitchen, living and dining room, naturally separated into two zones by the spectacular staircase that is the core of the home. A wood-burning stove in the single storey area creates a cosy atmosphere.

Underneath it all is a large basement, built using an ICF system, which houses a separate studio space as well as utility and storage areas.

As well as the super-insulated, air tight building envelope, this Facit Home also uses an air source heat pump to generate heat for the underfloor heating system.
